Airbnb is globally introducing the „Reserve Now, Pay Later” option.”

Airbnb is expanding its deferred payment option in all markets. A new option allows guests to book selected accommodations without immediate payment. Payment is then made later, before the free cancellation deadline.

The „Reserve Now, Pay Later” option was first tested in the USA. The results, according to the company, were very strong. More than 70 per cent of users chose this type of payment for eligible bookings.

The model is simple. The guest confirms the booking without being charged at checkout. The amount is automatically charged before the end of the free cancellation period. The functionality is available for listings with flexible or moderate cancellation policies. With moderate policies, free cancellation is possible up to five days before arrival.

Accommodations with „Firm” or „Limited” policies are not included. There are also currency restrictions. Payments in Brazilian real, Indian rupee, and Turkish lira are not currently supported.

The option supplements existing instalment payments via Klarna Where is it available. Time Airbnb further emphasises the trend of financial flexibility in travel planning.

Research data among American travellers shows a clear interest in such models. The majority of respondents consider flexible payments important. More than half actively use them when available. Of note is also the fact that a significant portion of travellers missed out on their desired accommodation due to delays in coordinating payments with fellow travellers.

The global rollout comes ahead of major events. Particularly noteworthy is FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be held in Canada, Mexico and the USA. In such circumstances, the possibility of early accommodation lock-in without immediate cost can have a significant impact on user behaviour.

For renters and the market, this means potentially fuller calendars more quickly. For travellers, it means greater freedom in planning. Payment flexibility is becoming an increasingly important element of competitiveness in the digital distribution of accommodation.
