Spain records records but also a change in tourist preferences

Spain is recording records but also a change in tourist preferences, which is also reflected in the latest data. Although official forecasts announce the arrival of 43 million foreign guests and expenditure of 64 billion euros, inflationary pressures lie behind the impressive figures. In addition, there is growing resistance from the local population to mass tourism.

Investment changes the tourist map

The Ministry of Tourism estimates that Spain From June to September, a six percent increase in arrivals compared to last year was recorded. A much more important figure for the budget is the predicted ten percent jump in nominal spending. Furthermore, the government attributes this trend to the state's €3.4 billion modernisation programme. The programme is aimed at strengthening competitiveness.

Interestingly, per-guest spending is growing faster than the number of arrivals. A geographical shift is also being observed. While traditional magnets like Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Balearic and Canary Islands are reporting moderate revenue growth of five to six percent, the country's interior and the northern coast are seeing an eight to ten percent surge in spending.

The challenge of real profitability and social pressure

Economic analysts nevertheless call for caution. They emphasise that the ten percent leap in spending is not exclusively the result of wealthier guests. Namely, the result reflects high inflation in the European hospitality sector, driven by the rise in energy, logistics, and labour costs.

In addition, Spanish tourism, which employs over three million people, suffers from structural risks. This summer's figures were partially inflated by the temporary weakness of competing destinations in the Eastern Mediterranean. At the same time, overloaded infrastructure and a lack of affordable housing due to the proliferation of apartments have led to a wave of protests from local residents in metropolises and on islands. This seriously undermines the long-term stability of this model. In the coming months, actual net profitability will be under scrutiny due to volatile operating costs.
