Serbia launches high-speed trains of 200 km/h on the renovated Novi Sad – Subotica line
Serbia has officially launched high-speed trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour on the renovated line between Novi Sad and Subotica. This completes the multi-year modernisation of a key railway connection between Belgrade and Subotica, which is now among the most modern in the region.
The new section, approximately 108 kilometres long, was officially opened at the beginning of October, with regular services commencing the following day. The journey between Belgrade and Subotica now takes around 79 minutes, a huge improvement compared to the previous multi-hour journeys.
The modernised railway line has two tracks, entirely new electrification and state-of-the-art signalling systems, while all stations along the route have been renovated or rebuilt. Chinese-manufactured trainsets, designed for comfort and high speeds, operate on the line.
This section is part of a wider project to build the Belgrade–Budapest railway line, which will enable travel between the two capitals in less than three hours once works in Hungary are completed. Serbia is thus strengthening its transport links with Central Europe and joining the high-speed rail network.
The opening of the new railway line also brings significant economic benefits – growth in tourism, investment, and logistical flows in the north of the country is expected, as well as better connectivity for the Western Balkan region.
Despite the challenges during construction, including the tragic incident at Novi Sad station last year, the completion of the project marks an important step towards a more modern and efficient transport system in Serbia.
High-speed trains between Belgrade, Novi Sad and Subotica represent a new era in which Rail is once again becoming a fast, comfortable, and competitive option for passengers and the economy.
