Significant differences in car rental prices: Where are tourists most exposed to cost traps?
AK Austria warns: price differences of up to 165% – choose carefully where and how you hire your vehicle
For many travellers, hiring a car during their annual holiday is synonymous with freedom and flexibility. However, research by the Chamber of Commerce of Upper Austria (AK Oberösterreich) has shown that such a decision can become a significant financial trap if the booking is not made carefully. In an analysis conducted for the first week of August 2025, differences in car hire prices reached as much as 165%.
Research: Where are prices lowest and where do tourists pay the most?
Comparing prices in 18 popular European tourist destinations – including the Greek islands, Cyprus, Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Portugal, France and Croatia – the offers of six leading international car rental companies were researched: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Enterprise and Sunny Cars.
The most affordable destination was Gran Canaria, where car hire without excess could be obtained for as little as 202 euros per week. On the other hand, Lisbon led the way in terms of prices – the cheapest offer was 333 euros, while the most expensive for the same type of vehicle reached 888 euros.
Hidden costs: additional shelves and high excess
One of the main cost challenges lies in insurance terms. In the event of an accident, the excess can be up to €2,783. If the traveller decides to completely remove the excess, it costs them an additional €90 per week on average. Although seemingly more expensive, this investment is often worthwhile as it eliminates the possibility of high costs in the event of damage.
Recommendations from the Automobile Club: comparison, direct booking, and caution when collecting
AK advises travellers to take the following steps:
- Compare offers book your vehicle directly with the provider, rather than through intermediary platforms that offer weaker protection in case of problems.
- Motor club members Like Austria's ÖAMTC, you can use their booking platforms with trusted partners and get discounts and insurance without a deductible.
- Upon collection of the vehicle, document the condition of the car well – photograph every scratch or damage.
- Return code, request written confirmation that the vehicle has been returned undamaged and record the fuel level and mileage.
Conclusion: planning saves money and stress
Car rental remains a very practical way to travel, but with proper preparation and careful reading of the conditions. The ÖAMTC's research clearly shows how carelessness can lead to considerable additional costs. Compare, book in good time and stay informed – because your safety and your wallet deserve it.
