Italy faces a 24-hour rail strike: possible train cancellations and delays
A national rail strike begins on Monday 7 September at 21:18 and lasts until Tuesday 8 September at 21:00. Passengers should expect cancellations, timetable changes and delays, including the period before the official start and after the end of the strike.
Train travel through Italy could be significantly disrupted for almost the whole of Tuesday. Trenitalia has confirmed that a national strike will involve staff from the FS Group, Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper and Trenord, whilst RFI also lists Italo among the affected operators.
Disruptions are therefore not limited to regional transport alone. Changes are also possible on high-speed and intercity services, which is particularly important for passengers who use the train as part of a broader itinerary towards airports or for continuing international travel.
Regional trains have guaranteed schedules
In regional transport, the minimum services prescribed by law apply. Trenitalia states that guaranteed trains on weekdays are scheduled between 06:00 and 09:00 and between 18:00 and 21:00. For medium and long-distance routes, a separate list of trains that should run during the strike has been published.
However, the status of an individual departure should be checked just before travelling. Railway operators warn that the consequences of the strike may begin before 21:18 on Monday and continue after 21:00 on Tuesday.
In Lombardy, for example, Trenord has announced that in the event of the cancellation of certain airport trains to Malpensa, it will organise replacement buses on certain routes.
