Hollywood glamour in the service of promotion: John Malkovich becomes the new face of Croatian tourism
The Croatian National Tourist Board is preparing an ambitious marketing campaign featuring a famous American actor, with its premiere timed to coincide with the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The Croatian National Tourist Board's new promotional strategy is playing on authenticity and strong connections with the diaspora. John Malkovich, an actor with an impressive career and Croatian roots, has taken the lead role in a new video project that aims to redefine how Croatia is presented on the global market. For the domestic tourism sector, this represents a significant leap in branding, especially in distant markets where a recognisable face often opens doors to new guest demographics.
The project combines top-tier Hollywood acting and American production aesthetics, with Pete Radovich being the key figure behind the camera. This multi-award-winning television producer, also of Croatian descent, has taken on the role of creative director. The collaboration between Malkovich and Radovich already has a proven recipe for success – their earlier joint projects in the television and advertising industries have so far earned five Emmys and numerous awards in Cannes. The domestic agency Bunker was engaged for filming on locations across the country, while the agency Brandmama worked on the script.
Focus on the American market and football momentum
The timing of this project's launch has not been left to chance. A comprehensive promotional film will be presented just before the start of the FIFA World Cup. Given that the tournament is being held in the United States, the Croatian National Tourist Board is primarily targeting high-spending American travellers.
Major sporting events are proven to generate enormous media space and a surge in destination searches, so combining Malkovich's charisma with global sporting excitement represents a well-thought-out business move.
What does this campaign bring to the domestic tourism sector?
Tourist agencies, hoteliers, and DMC managers can expect increased interest from the North American market, which has shown stable growth in the luxury and cultural tourism segment for years. Campaigns of this type are moving Croatia away from its image as solely a summer “sun and sea” destination, and are emphasising lifestyle, emotion, and authentic stories that attract guests outside the main season.
While the sector awaits the official premiere of the entire film, the HTZ has already released a short teaser that hints at the visual direction of the new campaign.
