Google is introducing hotel bookings in AI Mode: bookings can now be completed without leaving search
Google's AI Mode in the US it is moving from the travel planning stage into the transaction itself. Travellers can find a hotel, choose a room and pay via Google Pay, while flights remain outside the direct booking process for now.
Google has taken one of the more concrete steps towards agency booking in tourism. Users of AI Mode in the US can now describe a trip in natural language, get hotel suggestions with prices and reviews, and complete the booking for part of the offer without leaving Google's interface.
Launch partners include Booking.com, Expedia, Hilton, Hotels.com, IHG Hotels & Resorts, Marriott International, Priceline, Trip.com, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, and Choice Hotels International. Payment is made via Google Pay, but Google does not act as the merchant. The hotel or booking platform remains the merchant of record and manages the booking and post-purchase customer support.
Google is becoming part of the booking process, but not an OTA
That distinction is not unimportant. For now, Google is not trying to take over the operational part of the business of OTA platforms or hotel chains. However, it is taking over an even larger part of the user journey.
Searching, comparison and decision-making can already take place within a single AI conversation, and payment is now joining them. For hotels, this means that data quality, inventory availability and the way rates are distributed to Google become even more directly linked to conversion.
For now there are no paid positions that would allow partners to purchase better placement in AI Mode results, but future experimentation with advertising formats is not ruled out.
The room price is now also compared with points
The second change could be just as interesting for hoteliers. AI Mode can now show how much a hotel or flight costs in points and miles.
Choice, Hilton and Wyndham are the first to be included on the hotel side, while Google is announcing Accor and Hyatt. The traveller therefore no longer has to open a loyalty app or check award availability separately. The cash price and the value of a stay using points can become part of the same decision-making process.
Europe for the most part remains outside hotel booking
Direct hotel booking it has launched in English in the US and is being rolled out gradually. Google states that certain new AI Mode features are not available to users in the European Economic Area.
For European and Adriatic hotels, therefore, the immediate distribution impact is not yet great. However, the direction is quite clear: AI search is gradually transforming from a discovery channel into a point of sale. If the same model spreads to Europe, the question will no longer be just how visible a hotel is on Google, but whether its inventory, price and content can be sufficiently well structured for AI to be able to make a booking from that content.
