Europeans and travel: domestic destinations and the EU remain in focus

Travel remains an important part of Europeans' lives.. During 2024, almost 249 million citizens of Europe, or around 65% of those aged 15 and over, made at least one multi-day trip for private reasons.

The most common choice was travel within one's own country. As many as 71.31% of all trips were domestic. When travelling abroad, Europeans mostly stayed within the European Union – 92.21% of international trips were made within the EU.

The differences are also visible in spending. Average spending on domestic trips was 303 euros, while overseas trips cost an average of 1,053 euros per trip.

Latest publication European tourism trips provides a detailed overview of current European tourism habits. It analyses who travels, where to, how, and where they stay, as well as the motives for travel – from leisure to business purposes – and spending levels. A valuable source of data for anyone wishing to better understand trends in the European tourism market.
