Austrian Airlines cancels flights to Zagreb, Croatia Airlines continues flights

Austrian Airlines will withdraw from Zagreb Airport at the beginning of 2027. The last flight on the Vienna–Zagreb route is scheduled for January 10, and there are no plans for a return during the summer season either.

This ends more than four decades of the Austrian carrier's presence in Zagreb. However, passengers will still be able to travel directly between the two cities, as Croatia Airlines continues to operate on this route.

Withdrawal after reducing the number of flights

Austrian In recent years, it has gradually reduced the volume of traffic towards Zagreb. During the summer of 2026, it operated one daily flight, while Croatia Airlines increased its offer to ten departures per week.

According to the planned winter schedule, the Croatian carrier continues to connect Zagreb and Vienna with two daily flights. Therefore, its offer will play a greater role both for direct travel and for passengers who continue to other destinations in Vienna.

For Zagreb Airport, the departure of the Austrian airline represents the loss of a long-standing carrier and part of the existing offer. However, the full effect will depend on the capacities and schedule of the remaining flights in 2027.

Presidency more important than the direct connection itself

Vienna is often a stopover for travelers from Zagreb on their way to European and distant destinations. Therefore, it will be important for travel agencies and business travel organizers how well the remaining departures fit into the continuation of the journey.

A smaller number of flights may limit the choice of practical combinations. Depending on the destination, passengers could have longer waiting times in Vienna or choose to travel via another hub. However, this should be checked for each itinerary, as changing carriers alone does not automatically mean a worse connection.

What to check for with existing reservations?

Agencies and travelers who already have reservations for the period after January 10 are advised to check the status of flights and any changes to the schedule. Special attention should be paid to the maps showing the Zagreb–Vienna flight as part of a longer journey.
