Airbnb aggressively expanding hotel offerings and targeting hotel guests

Airbnb enters a new phase of growth – aggressively expanding its hotel offerings and actively targeting guests who traditionally opt for hotel accommodation. This strategy has a clear goal: to increase the availability of accommodation in destinations where short-term rental supply is already full and to attract travellers who prefer hotel services.

New focus: hotel partnerships

Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky confirmed that Airbnb is entering the hotel segment “significantly more aggressively”. The company is collaborating with independent hotels, offering them competitive commissions and additional marketing channels. The focus is on high-demand markets where Airbnb's private accommodation supply is insufficient to cover all traveller enquiries.

Pritom se oslanja i na platformu HotelTonight, which it uses to attract hotel partners and promote last-minute offers. Collaborations are particularly expanding in the USA, with a focus on traveller segments traditionally inclined towards hotels – for example, the Hispanic population or guests from regions where hotels are the dominant form of accommodation.

Hotel experience in Airbnb format

To reduce the gap between private accommodation and hotels, Airbnb is introducing Airbnb Services – additional services such as a personal chef, massages, a hairdresser, and private trainers. They are available at over 260 locations, with the aim of providing guests with hotel-level comfort within private accommodation.

Also, the platform is strengthening again. Airbnb Experiences, offering exclusive tours, workshops, and experiences, often in collaboration with celebrities or renowned local partners. This brings it closer to the concept of a hotel concierge, but with an emphasis on authentic local experiences.

Why is this important for the tourism industry?

  • Hotels They are gaining a new distribution channel with a large global user base.
  • Destination managers I can leverage Airbnb's marketing reach to attract travellers during off-peak times.
  • Hosts and landlords they need to follow the trend of introducing additional services to remain competitive compared to hotels present on the platform.
  • Travel agencies they have the opportunity to offer mixed packages combining hotel and private accommodation through a single channel.

Airbnb is transforming itself from a leader in short-term rentals into hybrid accommodation platform which combines the best of the hotel and private sectors. For B2B players in tourism, this means new opportunities, but also challenges – from adapting offers to developing new services that will satisfy the platform's increasingly diverse audience.
