Winter cruises in the Mediterranean: who is it suitable for and what should be checked before booking?

City tours, local food, and dinner on board can be a good plan for a winter holiday. Before booking, it’s worth checking how much time you have at the ports, what’s included in the price, and how you would spend the day when the weather changes plans.

Winter cruises around the Mediterranean are a good choice if you want to visit several destinations without constantly changing hotels and packing suitcases. It will be especially suitable for travelers whose main reasons for traveling are museums, architecture and gastronomy.

There is also an offer for the 2026/2027 season. MSC Cruises, for example, lists cruises in the winter program to the Western Mediterranean, including Italy, France, Spain, and Malta. The specific ports and length of stay depend on the chosen departure.

When choosing, start with what you want to experience. For some, it’s several hours of independent sightseeing every day. For others, organized trips and returning to the ship for lunch are more suitable.

How much time really remains for sightseeing?

In the list of ports, it is easy to recognize several cities that you have long wanted to visit. Then look at the schedule: when the ship arrives, when the passengers can get ashore, and until when they have to return.

When planning your tour, account for disembarking, transportation to the center or attraction, and return. Also check the exact location of the terminal. The destination name in the program does not indicate how far away the place you want to see is from the port.

If you plan to visit a museum or another popular attraction, check the opening hours for your arrival date before purchasing tickets. Pay special attention to holidays and days when the attraction is closed.

For each city, choose one thing you most want to experience, and leave the rest as an option. This way, you’ll be able to make a pleasant day without constantly checking the clock.

Choose the boat based on the amenities you will use

In winter, it’s worth taking a closer look at the enclosed spaces and the program on board. Are you interested in performances, fitness, wellness, or a quiet place to read? Check out what’s available on the specific ship and which activities are subject to additional charges.

If you are traveling with children, take a look at the age groups of the clubs, the registration process, and the opening hours. If you want to swim, check whether there is an indoor or heated pool and whether all family members can use it.

Consider the cabin as well. If you plan to spend a lot of time in it, compare the space, the bed layout, and the daylight. For the balcony, estimate how much you would use it during the chosen trip and whether the difference in price justifies it.

Compare the total cost of the vacation

Compare offers for the same date, number of passengers, and similar cabin category. Then review the meals, drinks, internet, excursions, transfers, and fees listed in the booking conditions.

Estimate the cost of the drink package based on your habits. Compare the price of the package to what you would realistically spend, taking into account the days when you will spend most of your time on land.

Add the arrival at the departure port, parking or transportation to the terminal, and possible overnight stay before boarding to the budget. If you are traveling by plane, consider arriving the day before to have a backup in case of a delay.

Be mindful of your phone while sailing as maritime roaming can be significantly more expensive than standard land-based roaming. MSC recommends turning on airplane mode and using the ship's Wi-Fi, along with checking the selected internet package beforehand.

Prepare for changes in weather and itinerary

For sightseeing, pack layered clothing, a jacket to protect against wind and rain, and comfortable footwear. Follow the forecast for individual ports directly before departure.

Weather conditions can also affect the arrival. MSC provides for the possibility of changing the route, schedule or port during the transport conditions. However, for independently purchased excursions, check the cancellation conditions if the ship does not arrive.

Before paying, try a simple test: imagine that bad weather replaces one planned excursion with a full day on board. Would you still have enough activities to look forward to? If so, your chosen cruise has the makings of an enjoyable winter holiday.
