Grand Egyptian Museum – Egypt opens the doors to its largest museum dedicated to a single civilisation
In July 2025, Egypt will open the doors of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) – the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. Located right next to the pyramids of Giza, this impressive 500,000 m² complex will be home to over 100,000 artefacts, including the complete collection of Pharaoh Tutankhamun's treasures, which will be exhibited in one place for the first time.
History brought to life in a new light
GEM is not just a museum – it is a bridge between the past and the future. Visitors are greeted by a 11-metres-tall statue of Ramesses II, and inside the museum are galleries charting 5,000 years of Egyptian history. A special attraction will be two halls dedicated to Tutankhamun, where his golden funerary mask, throne, jewellery and other artefacts, many of which have never been displayed before, can be seen.
New impetus for Egyptian tourism
The opening of GEM is part of Egypt's wider strategy to boost cultural tourism. At ITB China 2025, Egypt will showcase its tourism potential, with a particular focus on the Chinese market. Plans include improving infrastructure, introducing Mandarin-speaking guides, and tailored itineraries for Chinese visitors.
Giza 2030: A Vision of the Future
GEM is central to the ambitious “Giza 2030” plan, which includes the construction of a pedestrian bridge to connect the museum with the pyramids, a new metro line, and an additional 5,000 hotel rooms. The aim is to increase visitor numbers from less than 500,000 to over 8 million annually.
In addition to offering insight into Egypt's rich history, the GEM also provides spectacular views of the pyramids from its terraces, interactive exhibitions with the latest technology, and spaces for education and research. For lovers of history, culture, and architecture, the GEM will be an unmissable destination.
The opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum marks the beginning of a new era for Egyptian tourism and cultural heritage. With its rich offerings and modern approach, Egypt is positioning itself as a premier destination for all who wish to experience the wonders of ancient civilisation in a contemporary setting.
