Slovenia invests 97.7 million euros in new international trains
Slovenian national passenger railway carrier SŽ Passenger Transport He signed contracts worth a total of €97.7 million on December 15th for the renewal of the international train fleet. The aim of the investment is to strengthen Slovenia's position in the international and cross-border passenger transport market, as part of a broader fleet modernisation programme.
New locomotives and IC carriages
As part of the project, Siemens Mobility will deliver four Vectron electric locomotives, with a maximum speed of 200 km/h, based on a contract worth €25.9 million. Delivery is planned for April and May 2027.
The locomotives will be equipped with the ETCS system and adapted for operation on three voltage systems (3 kV DC, 25 kV 50 Hz, and 15 kV 16.7 Hz). They will be certified for traffic in Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, and the Czech Republic, as well as on the Villa Opicina – Trst Centrale section in Italy.
At the same time, the company Hungarian Wagon will deliver 20 new IC+ carriages, with a total value of 71.8 million euros. Among them are five carriages specially adapted for persons with reduced mobility and for bicycle transport. Delivery is planned between June and October 2028.
The carriages are designed for speeds up to 200 km/h and will offer air conditioning, Wi-Fi, passenger information systems, seat reservations, sockets and USB ports, as well as systems for counting passengers and tracking occupancy in real-time. They are certified for operation in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Serbia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.
Strategic objective: regional rail hub
The renovation of SŽ Potniški Promet's fleet is already well underway. The delivery of 72 new trains, previously supplied by Stadler.
These investments mean better connectivity between destinations, higher quality services for passengers, and a stronger role for railways in the sustainable development of tourism in the region.
