MSC Cruises has ordered four new cruise ships: the new „New Frontier“ class will arrive from 2030.

MSC Cruises has officially ordered four new cruise ships, with the option of an additional order of more of two ships, from German Shipyards MEYER WERFT. This contract begins first collaboration between MSC Cruises and the Papenburg-based shipbuilder and at the same time a completely new class of ships called New Frontier.

The announcement has been made 15 December in Berlin, with the participation of representatives from German federal and regional authorities and the top executives of both companies. The project has significant industrial and strategic weight, both for the cruise sector and for European shipbuilding.

Key features of the new class

Class of ships New Frontier will be among the largest in the MSC fleet:

  • maximum capacity up to 5,400 passengers
  • eye 180,000 gross register tons
  • the first deliveries are planned for 2030, and then one ship per year

The new class will enable MSC Cruises to develop new itineraries, and greater flexibility in destination planning, and a further upgrading of the passenger experience on cruises.

Focus on sustainability and technology

Particular emphasis was placed on advanced ecological technologies. New ships will be designed in accordance with MSC Cruises' long-term strategy and the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Time is further strengthening its position in the sustainable cruising tourism segment.

As highlighted by the Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises Pierfrancesco Vago, The combination of MEYER WERFT's engineering expertise and MSC's vision will enable the creation of ships that redefine contemporary cruising.

This investment confirms strong growth of the cruise industry, long-term demand for large ships and the increasingly important role of sustainability in the development of new tourism products and destinations.
