Japan introduces JESTA system: new rules for travel from 2028
Japan continues to follow global trends in travel digitization. The government has announced the introduction of a new electronic travel authorisation system – Yes Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, which should be fully operational no later than April 2028.
What is JESTA and who is it concerned with
This will primarily apply to travellers from countries that do not currently require a visa to enter Japan. This includes a large number of European markets.
The model is similar to the American ESTA system. Travellers will need to, before travelling:
- complete online form
- Enter personal and travel details
- Please provide your itinerary and accommodation details
- to pay a processing fee for the application
Without approved authorisation, it will not be possible to board the flight, even for short stays up to 90 days.
Greater control before departure
An important change is the role of airlines. Before boarding, carriers will have to check if a passenger has a valid ESTA authorisation. Otherwise, boarding will not be permitted.
According to data from the Japanese authorities, a significant portion of overstays comes precisely from visa-free countries. ETIAS should enable earlier passenger checks and the filtering of potentially risky cases.
Global trend
Japan follows with this move the direction that other destinations are already taking. The European Union is introducing ETIAS, while the United Kingdom is also developing its own system.
Although it is an additional procedure, in the long term, such systems should bring greater security and efficiency to international travel.
Japan is clearly sending a message – the future of travel is digital, but also more strictly controlled.
