Emirati – High-Speed Rail is Transforming Travel: Etihad Rail Connects Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Whole of the Emirates
The United Arab Emirates is embarking on one of its most ambitious infrastructure stories – Etihad Rail, a high-speed passenger rail network that will connect all seven emirates, as well as key Middle Eastern cities.
Through a 900-kilometre system, trains will reach speeds of up to 350 km/h, meaning the journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai will take just 30 minutes, and to Fujairah around one hour and 40 minutes. The aim is to shorten journeys by 30 to 40 percent and provide a fast, safe, and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport.
First passenger trains already in 2026.
Work is in full swing – stations are being built in Sakamkam, Fujairah Port, and large bridges for trains travelling at over 200 mph. The first phase, which includes the Abu Dhabi-Dubai high-speed line, is expected to launch in 2026–2027, with the entire network anticipated for completion by 2030.
When the entire project is operational, it will connect 11 cities and regions, including Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Al Dhaid, and Al Sila, and will transport around 36 million passengers annually.
More than speed – a vision of sustainability and comfort
Etihad Rail is not just about speed. The modern trains, manufactured by Spanish company CAF, will be luxuriously equipped – with Wi-Fi, chargers, infotainment and a quiet ride thanks to advanced acoustic insulation. The system uses the latest European signalling standard ETCS Level 2 and standard gauge track, adapted for combined freight and passenger traffic.
The Freight Network has been operating since 2023, and each freight train removes up to 300 lorries from the roads, meaning fewer traffic jams and less emissions.
Great economic potential
Etihad Rail is also seen as a driver of economic growth – the UAE expects the high-speed line alone to bring around €35 billion of additional GDP in the next 50 years. In addition, the new network is encouraging tourism development – tourists will be able to visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi in the morning and enjoy the beach in Dubai by the afternoon.
Plans extend beyond UAE borders
In the long term, the railway will connect to Oman (Hafeet Rail) and Saudi Arabia, which would transform the UAE into a true railway hub for the region.
Etihad Rail represents a revolution for the daily lives, businesses, and tourism of the Emirates. Faster and cleaner travel, better connectivity, and modern standards of comfort are just part of the story that could inspire similar projects in other countries in the region.
