Istra is Number 1 in Europe: cycling tourism has become a key tool for year-round tourism
The Global Cycle Tourism Index has confirmed what the market already suggests – Istria is currently leading Europe in cycle tourism and is increasingly less dependent on seasonality.
Istria has made a breakthrough which goes beyond classic tourism awards. The results of the Global Cycle Tourism Index (CTI) were presented at the Fiera del Cicloturismo in Padua, according to which this very region has been declared the best cycle tourism destination in Europe for 2025.
This research, signed by Komoot and Bikenomist, is based on data from over 50 million users. Such a sample provides a realistic insight into the behaviour and preferences of cycle tourists, making this title relevant to anyone involved in the development and sale of tourism products.
With a total of 71.12 points, Istria has taken the leading position ahead of established destinations like Spain's Balearic Islands., which further strengthened its status as one of the most competitive outdoor regions in Europe.
Cycling tourism in Istria is no longer a seasonal product
One of the key insights from this research relates to seasonality. Istra has earned the title of „King of Summer“ but it is even more important that it maintains high positions throughout the year.
In spring and autumn it is found immediately behind the Balearics, while in winter it ranked third in Europe. For a destination without a tropical climate, such a result indicates something else – A high-quality developed product that functions independently of the season.
For tour operators and DMCs, this means more stable demand and the opportunity to create offers outside of peak months. This is precisely where cycle tourism is becoming one of the key tools for extending the season.
Infrastructure, security and service as the foundation of competitiveness
The CTI index is based on four criteria: destination popularity, quality and network of routes, safety, and the level of bike-friendly services. Istria ranks highly in all categories, indicating long-term and coordinated development.
In practice, this includes well-maintained and clearly marked trails of varying difficulty levels, specialised accommodation such as Bed & Bike facilities, and additional infrastructure, including a network of e-charging stations and logistical support for cyclists.
Such a system does not arise spontaneously. It is about continuous investment and cooperation between the public and private sectors, which is now also reflected in international recognition.
Istria as a leader in Croatia's broader positioning
What further strengthens this result is the fact that Croatia is increasingly emerging as a relevant cycling tourism region. Along with Istria, several Adriatic counties have entered the top 10 European destinations, thereby profiling the entire coast as a bike-friendly zone.
For the industry, this opens up the possibility of connecting regions into unique products. Instead of individual destinations, Croatia can increasingly be marketed as an integrated cycling tourism route, which is particularly interesting for international tour operators.
Events further consolidate the market position
Istria's positioning is further supported by a strong events calendar. The UCI Istria Gran Fondo, Eroica Istria – Truffle Tour, Cro Race, Istria 300, and Ironman 70.3 already attract a specific profile of guests and increase the destination's visibility in key markets.
Such events not only bring short-term revenue but also, in the long term, build the destination's perception as a serious player in the sports and outdoor tourism segment.
With this result, Istria is not only confirming the quality of its existing offer, but also the direction of development. Cycle tourism is proving to be one of the few segments that simultaneously raises destination value and reduces seasonality - which makes it strategically important for the entire industry.
