According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, residents made approximately <strong>277 million trips with at least one overnight stay<\/strong> \u2013 the highest since this survey began in 2012. This means an average of more than three trips per resident per year. The number of trips rose by 11% compared with 2023 and by 6% compared with 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the tourism industry, this is a strong signal that travel has once again become a central part of Germans' everyday lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Record results and the return of the desire for travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Statistics show that the desire for holidays, adventure and new experiences has reached a new level. After years of restrictions, Germans are clearly making up for lost time \u2013 a phenomenon known as <em>revenge travel<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travel doesn't just benefit hotels and restaurants, but the entire value chain: carriers, destinations and local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Imbalance: Private travel grows, business lags<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although private travel has reached record levels, <strong>Business travel remained below pre-pandemic levels<\/strong>. Last year there were 37 million, which is 10% fewer than in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reasons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>digitalisation of business<\/strong> \u2013 video conferences have replaced some in-person meetings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost rationalisation<\/strong> Companies want to reduce travel budgets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For business tourism, including city centre hotels and event organisers, this means a lasting market transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where do Germans travel the most?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most travel is still within Germany \u2013 even <strong>163 million journeys<\/strong>. The popularity of domestic destinations stems from the diversity of landscapes, urban amenities, and proximity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foreign destinations are dominated by neighbouring and traditional holiday countries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Italy<\/strong> \u2013 gastronomy, culture and coast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Austria<\/strong> \u2013 mountains, skiing, and weekend breaks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spain<\/strong> \u2013 Balearic and Canary Islands and coasts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>France and the Netherlands<\/strong> \u2013 due to proximity and easy access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These trends show that Germans like to combine the close and familiar with classic Mediterranean destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transport: the car remains the undisputed leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mode of travel clearly confirms the dominance of the car:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>58% of all journeys<\/strong> by car<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>19% by train<\/strong> \u2013 increasingly important for domestic and urban European travel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>17% by aeroplane<\/strong> \u2013 mostly for more distant European and intercontinental destinations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3% by bus and other forms of transport<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This data is important for planning transport and tourism infrastructure as it shows how crucial the car still is for family and individual tourism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the records, <strong>around 20% of residents did not travel at all<\/strong>.
