When we talk about the CO2 footprint in the aviation and hotel industries: why it is important for business travel, we most often focus on transport, especially air travel, but other sectors, such as the hotel industry, also play a significant role. Although theoretical sustainability goals are clear, corporate agencies and their clients face technical and regulatory challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-zasto-aviokompanije-dijele-podatke-o-emisijama-co\u2082\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do airlines share CO\u2082 emissions data?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More and more airlines are transparently displaying CO\u2082 emissions when purchasing tickets, and the reasons for this are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Regulatory requirements<\/strong> The European Union and organisations like ICAO are introducing mandatory emission reporting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passenger and investor pressure<\/strong> Environmentally conscious consumers and corporations are seeking transparency and more sustainable travel options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carbon offsetting<\/strong> Passengers can reduce their carbon footprint through carbon credits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preparing for future taxes<\/strong> \u2013 CO\u2082 emission taxes are expected to increase, so airlines are adapting in advance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you ever wondered how a CO2 footprint is determined? There's some controversy surrounding this, as experts can't agree on the exact formula for calculating CO2 footprint values at different flight altitudes, so it seems to me there's a lot of guesswork involved. Let's leave that for another occasion\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Regulatory requirements for companies: What is changing for passengers, businesses and agencies?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulation increasingly impacts <a href=\"https:\/\/tragento.com\/en\/odrzivost-i-co2-emisije\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"1853\">The importance of the CO2 footprint<\/a> detailed reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/icao-carbon-emissions-calculator\">CO2<\/a> imprint, and key regulations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Obligation to display CO\u2082 emissions<\/strong> when buying airline tickets in the EU.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental taxes<\/strong> on high-emission flights (e.g. France is introducing special taxes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restrictions on short-haul flights<\/strong> Is there a high-speed rail alternative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corporate reporting obligation<\/strong> \u2013 Companies in the EU must report emissions from official travel according to the new <em>CSRD directive.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tourism agency reporting<\/strong> \u2013 Agencies issuing flight tickets to business customers must submit emission reports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sto-je-csrd-direktiva\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the CSRD directive?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) is an EU directive that obliges large and medium-sized companies to report in detail on their environmental impact. This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mandatory monitoring and reporting<\/strong> on CO\u2082 emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Standardised reports<\/strong> according to European rules (ESRS) to regulatory bodies in the parent countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mandatory data audit<\/strong> as well as all other business data to prevent so-called \u201cgreenwashing\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This directive directly impacts business travel \u2013 many companies are now analysing flights their employees will travel on more closely and choosing more sustainable options in order to reduce emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-kompenzacija-emisija-kako-to-funkcionira\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Offsetting emissions: How does it work?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If emissions cannot be avoided or reduced, companies and travellers resort to additional payments to compensate for CO2 emissions, indirectly funding projects that reduce CO2, such as forest planting, improving energy efficiency, or investing in renewable sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many airlines, such as Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Ryanair, and others, offer the option of offsetting emissions when purchasing a ticket. Other companies have also emerged that are involved in fundraising for emissions offsetting. Personally, this part doesn't seem very transparent to me, but it satisfies the formality and fits within the EU directive. In my opinion, the only long-term solution lies in the development of sustainable fuels (SAF) and new technologies for reducing emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-kako-co\u2082-utjece-na-hotelsku-industriju\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How does CO\u2082 affect the hotel industry?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hotel sector is also looking for ways to reduce its carbon footprint and adapt to new challenges, both ecological and regulatory. The most important challenges here are certainly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Energy consumption<\/strong> Hotels use large amounts of energy for heating, cooling, and running kitchens. The focus is increasingly on using \u201cgreen\u201d energy (solar panels, energy-efficient systems). Reducing water consumption and waste is also an important ecological factor for lowering the carbon footprint. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regulations and standards<\/strong> \u2013 Energy certificates and sustainable hotel practices are becoming a mandatory standard in many countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainability as a competitive advantage<\/strong> \u2013 Hotels with lower emissions are more attractive to environmentally conscious guests as well as companies wanting to reduce their carbon footprint. Many hotels also offer carbon-neutral options for their business guests by offering more environmentally friendly options within the hotel, and also provide the possibility to compensate for their CO2 footprint, similar to airlines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reporting Obligation<\/strong> \u2013 Large hotel chains in the EU will have to report on emissions according to the CSRD directive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, regulatory pressures and increasing passenger environmental awareness are transforming the tourism sector. Transparency in emissions, stricter regulations, and CO\u2082 offsetting options are becoming standard.
