It is time to put the brakes on. From <strong>27 September 2026.<\/strong> comes into force in the year <strong>European EmpCo Directive<\/strong> which completely changes the game rules in communication with consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-9c09fbe8\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a sea of business announcements and advertisements, terms like \u201esustainable\u201c, \u201eeco\u201c and \u201eclimate-friendly\u201c have become everyday occurrences. However, how much genuine green policy is hidden behind those attractive phrases? The European Union is putting an end to marketing tricks and so-called greenwashing by adopting a new <strong>EmpCo Directive (EU 2024\/825)<\/strong> on empowering consumers for the green transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-9b20e4d2\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New legislative amendments have also been implemented into the Croatian legal system through amendments <strong>Consumer Protection Act (OG 59\/26)<\/strong>, which means that entrepreneurs have less and less time to adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-3d09650c\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sto-tocno-donosi-empco-direktiva\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the EmpCo Directive introduce precisely?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-c5bf0db8\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tourism sector traditionally likes to boast about natural beauty and \u201esustainable business\u201c. However, under new regulations, it will no longer be enough to state in a free-form hotel, agency or campsite description that you are \u201eeco\u201c or that you \u201ecare about the planet\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this brings about three major changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>End of general claims:<\/strong> The use of terms such as \u201eeco-friendly accommodation\u201c or \u201eeco-friendly travel\u201c without concrete data and certification will become illegal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verifiable certificates:<\/strong> Green labels and certificates must come from recognised, independent bodies. Internally created \u201eeco-labels\u201c without substance lose all value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review of communication materials:<\/strong> All companies are required to thoroughly review and adjust all promotional content, from websites and brochures to advertising campaigns.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-4fb594a7\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-kako-provjeriti-ispunjavate-li-nove-uvjete\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to check if you meet the new conditions?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-e8bb17b5\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given that adapting to new rules requires expert knowledge and a timely response, numerous training sessions and initiatives are being organised. For example, ahead of the official start of the directive's application, the Good Tourism Institute is organising a free webinar aimed at tourism professionals. There, tourism workers can get concrete guidance, as well as check in advance whether their existing marketing claims meet the strict criteria of the EmpCo Directive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-263daccd\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-koga-se-sve-tice-nova-regulativa\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who does the new regulation concern?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-8d09fdcc\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These rules do not choose the industry, they apply to all economic operators communicating with consumers in the territory of the European Union, regardless of their size or annual turnover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-0754fae7\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This directive presents a particular challenge to the tourism sector, which relies heavily on sustainability labels, green certificates and promotional campaigns targeting environmentally conscious travellers. Travel agencies, hoteliers and other businesses operating in the tourism sector will need to review their websites, brochures, social media and word-of-mouth messaging in detail and align them with the new legal framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-af97cb19\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-odrzivost-kao-stvarnost-a-ne-marketinski-trik\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustainability as a reality, not a marketing gimmick<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-qi-blocks-spacer qodef-block-container qodef-block-87fa1721\"><div class=\"qi-block-spacer qodef-block qodef-m\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EmpCo Directive doesn't mean the end of green business; quite the contrary! It represents an opportunity for all those tourism operators who genuinely invest in sustainable development, energy efficiency, and environmental conservation. The time when empty phrases could be used as a quick lure for guests is slowly coming to an end.
