In July, Istanbul Airport took first place in Europe for passenger numbers. The difference compared to Heathrow is not large, but it shows how important infrastructure and the potential for further expansion are becoming in the competition between major hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Istanbul Airport<\/a> In July 2026, it served 8.15 million passengers, while 7.86 million passed through Heathrow. Even more interesting is the look at the first seven months of the year: Istanbul reached 48.07 million passengers, and Heathrow 47.85 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Istanbul is making progress <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The change at the top did not come out of nowhere. In 2025, Heathrow finished as Europe's busiest airport with 84.48 million passengers, but Istanbul lagged behind by only about 40,000 passengers. Meanwhile, traffic at the Istanbul hub has grown by almost a quarter in five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Istanbul also has an infrastructural advantage. Since April 2025, it has been using simultaneous operations on three independent runways, which was the first such system in Europe. A fourth main runway is scheduled to begin operations in the final quarter of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For airlines, this means more space for new frequencies, transfer traffic and network expansion. Indeed, the hub's ability to offer additional slots is an increasingly important factor in the decision of where carriers will concentrate capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heathrow uses the result as an argument for the third runway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heathrow's July traffic fell by 1.5 per cent year-on-year. The drop in traffic to the Middle East of 20.2 per cent was particularly felt, while Asia-Pacific continued to grow. Despite this, the airport stresses that demand for access to Heathrow remains strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loss of top spot is why Heathrow immediately linked this with the third runway project. The UK Government is currently holding consultations on a new expansion framework, with a final planning decision targeted for 2029. The project will have to meet criteria on economic growth, climate, air quality, and noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the tourism industry, this race is not merely a matter of prestige. A hub that can add flights more easily attracts new airlines, opens up markets and increases the accessibility of destinations. Istanbul currently has more room for manoeuvre precisely on that side of the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
