The consequences are already being felt in Palermo, Comiso and Malta, as thousands of passengers try to find alternative routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-catania-ostaje-izvan-redovnog-operativnog-ritma\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Catania remains outside the regular operational rhythm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problems in Catania are no longer a short-term schedule disruption. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport suspended flights once again on Wednesday, 12 August, following new ash emissions from Etna. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/etna-ash-prompts-extended-closure-catania-airport-disrupting-peak-season-travel-2026-08-12\/\">SAC operator information carried by Reuters<\/a>, airspace restrictions should remain in place at least until Thursday at 16:00 local time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current eruptive phase has been ongoing for several days, and the situation is further complicated by the variable wind direction. During this phase, INGV issued a red VONA status for aviation, the highest level of warning due to the danger that volcanic ash poses to aircraft. Earlier this week, activity was recorded at multiple vents on Etna, along with several lava flows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-palermo-preuzima-promet-ali-problem-se-seli-na-cestu\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Palermo takes over the traffic, but the problem shifts to the road<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disruption can therefore increasingly less be viewed merely as a problem for a single airport. <a href=\"https:\/\/tragento.com\/en\/category\/destinations\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"191\">Palermo <\/a>has in recent days taken over as many as 190 flights that were originally scheduled to use Catania. This has increased the pressure on the terminal, as well as on buses, taxis and other forms of transport between western and eastern Sicily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to estimates reported by El Pa\u00eds, around 30,000 passengers have been affected so far. Comiso, which was meant to serve as one of the alternative points, also temporarily suspended operations due to the ash. The consequences have also reached Malta, where flight cancellations and delays have been recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-za-turizam-je-veci-problem-nedostatak-alternative\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">For tourism, the lack of alternatives is a bigger problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For<a href=\"https:\/\/tragento.com\/en\/category\/tourism-industry-2\/\" data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"143\"> tourism industry <\/a>The key problem is not Etna itself. Eruptions and temporary restrictions in Catania are a well-known operational risk. However, August shows how quickly the system comes under pressure when a disruption occurs during the peak demand weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airlines have to change rotations and reroute aircraft, while tour operators and agencies look for accommodation, transfers and new connections for passengers. At the same time, the limited capacity of alternative transport in Sicily prolongs the recovery even after the reopening of the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a destination that relies heavily on air transport, the current situation is reopening the question of better connectivity for Sicilian airports and more efficient passenger redirection plans.
