30th anniversary of Zagreb – Sarajevo flight by Croatia Airlines
Croatia Airlines marks 30 years of regular flights between Zagreb and Sarajevo. From the first flight on August 26, 1996, to the end of August this year, 1,345,041 passengers have been transported on the route in a total of 36,196 flights.
The first flight was performed by an ATR 42, at a time when the Sarajevo airport was starting to receive civilian traffic after the war. Croatia Airlines was then among the first carriers to participate in the reconstruction of international air connectivity from Sarajevo. The line has been operating year-round since then, with a temporary interruption during the pandemic.
Sarajevo is not just a point-to-point market
The business value of this line is not limited to the traffic between the two main cities. Zagreb also serves as a transfer point for some passengers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, connecting them with the rest of the Croatia Airlines network and the Star Alliance partner carriers.
In the current flight schedule, Zagreb and Sarajevo are connected throughout the year, while Croatia Airlines connects Sarajevo via Zagreb with other European destinations.
Such a model is particularly relevant for smaller regional aviation markets, where direct flights to a larger number of European cities are not always commercially viable. For agencies and business travelers, the combination of frequency, year-round traffic, and the possibility of continuing the journey through Zagreb is important.
Three decades of cooperation with the Sarajevo airport
The anniversary also marks 30 years of cooperation between Croatia Airlines and Sarajevo International Airport. The partnership was already highlighted as one of the longest-standing relationships between the Sarajevo airport and regional carriers on the occasion of the 20th and 25th anniversaries.
For Croatia Airlines, the anniversary comes at a time of fleet renewal with Airbus A220 aircraft and the gradual development of the network. It is precisely regional routes like that from Sarajevo that will show how the new fleet and flight schedule structure can strengthen Zagreb as a transfer hub for the Southeast European markets.
On the occasion of the anniversary, passengers on the Zagreb – Sarajevo flight received vouchers with a 30 percent discount, and the carrier also announced additional promotional activities in the Bosnia and Herzegovina market.
