American Airlines to connect Vienna and Philadelphia from May 2027
American Airlines is entering the Austrian market for the first time and, from 6th May 2027, is introducing a daily seasonal route between Vienna and Philadelphia. The Airbus A321XLR flights open up a new transatlantic option for Austria, as well as the wider Central and South-Eastern European market.
Next summer, American Airlines will connect Austria to its network for the first time. The new Philadelphia – Vienna route will operate daily from 6 May 2027, and the airline will use a 155-seat Airbus A321XLR on the service. American will thus become the only US carrier with direct flights to Vienna.
The flight from Vienna will depart at 11:40 and arrive in Philadelphia at 15:55 local time. The return is scheduled for 18:50, arriving in Vienna the following day at 10:05. Although it is a seasonal route, American plans to keep it until early January 2028, thereby covering the Christmas travel period as well.
Philadelphia is getting a bigger role in American's network
For American Airlines, Philadelphia is becoming an even more prominent transatlantic gateway. Alongside Vienna, the company is adding Porto from that hub in 2027 and bringing back Reykjavik, while the overall European network from Philadelphia will encompass more than 20 destinations. Vienna builds upon the expansion towards Central Europe, where American launched routes to Prague and Budapest during 2026.
For travellers from Europe, Philadelphia's value lies not just in being a new direct destination. The American Airlines hub allows for onward travel to a large number of markets in the US, as well as to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. This makes the route interesting for travel agencies and TMCs putting together more complex North American itineraries.
A321XLR is changing the economics of transatlantic routes
The choice of the A321XLR is particularly interesting from an industrial perspective. The aircraft enables carriers to open up long-haul routes with lower capacity than with conventional wide-body aircraft. Exactly for this reason, American can test markets like Vienna with lower capacity risk, and it is using the same strategy on new routes to Porto, Amsterdam, and Nice.
For part of the Adriatic region, the new route may be relevant due to its proximity. Vienna already functions as one of the important departure points for intercontinental travel from Central and South-Eastern Europe, so an additional American gateway increases the choice of itineraries towards North America. Ticket sales for American's new routes begin on 31 August 2026.
